Chapter 1: The New Neighbour


Sera Blackwood had lived quietly in Hollow Creek for three years without incident — if you didn't count the time she accidentally made every rose in the town square bloom in January, or the afternoon she lost her temper at the hardware store and every light bulb on aisle four exploded simultaneously, or the morning in June when she had been crying in the garden and the lavender grew six inches in a single hour and Mrs. Chen from two doors down had knocked to ask what she was feeding it. Minor things. Containable things. The kind of things that, in a sufficiently inattentive world, accumulated without consequence.

She was very good at containment. She had been practicing it for most of her adult life.

The cottage sat at the end of Fenwick Lane, the last house before the woods swallowed the road whole. She had chosen it for precisely this reason — the position at the lane's end meant one neighbour on the left, open field on the right, and the treeline close enough that she could hear it at night when the wind moved through, a sound like water, like breathing, like the world remembering itself. The letting agent had apologized for the isolation. Sera had signed the lease before he finished his sentence.

She kept the garden wild on purpose. Lavender thick enough that it poured over the fence in great purple cascades through summer, rosemary twisted into shapes that no wind had ever made, foxglove standing in rows along the south wall that were perhaps a little too straight, a little too deliberate in their spacing, the kind of thing that was invisible if you were not already looking for it. Normal people, she had found over years of careful observation, did not look closely at gardens. Normal people were occupied with their phones and their schedules and the entirely uncomplicated forward motion of their entirely uncomplicated lives.

This was something Sera had come to find both useful and, in her more honest moments, quietly sad.

She was thirty-one years old. She had lived in seven places since she was twenty-two, each one longer than the last as she got better at the various arts of concealment, each one left behind when something shifted and the questions started closing in. She had filled ledgers with careful records of herb ratios and moon timings, and she managed the cold storage room at Ashfield's, the supermarket on the village's main road, where she had worked for seven years and where the freezer temperatures posed no particular discomfort to her, and where she took sick leave with sufficient regularity that no one questioned why she never seemed to be bothered by the cold. She had a practice passed down through her mother's line that she used every day and could not discuss. She had Delia, in Edinburgh, who was the closest thing she had to a sister, and she had her grandmother's journals in a locked box under the bed, and she had the cottage and the garden and the particular peace of a life arranged very carefully around a secret.

She had been, for most of those three years, content with this. Content was not happiness, exactly, but it was stable and it was hers, and Sera Blackwood had learned not to reach past what she could hold.


She was refilling the birdbath on the last morning of August — plain water, no enchantment, she had been very disciplined about the birdbath lately — when the moving truck pulled into the drive across the lane.

The house had been empty since she arrived. The letting agent, a man named Gordon who came through twice a year to check the gutters and left her receipts in the letterbox, had mentioned once that the property belonged to an estate and that the family was considering selling. She had stopped listening at selling, quietly calculating what a new owner might mean, and had renewed the perimeter ward that same afternoon as a precaution. Since then the house had stood empty — curtains drawn, garden going to seed, the gate's paint flaking in long pale strips. She had grown used to it. The empty house was, in its way, a comfort: a buffer between her lane and the rest of the village.

She watched the truck with the sideways attention she brought to most things — seemingly focused on the birdbath, actually cataloguing the vehicle's size, the professional logo on the side, the number of men who climbed down from the cab. A two-man crew. Mid-sized truck, not the largest, which meant either the new tenant traveled light or this was a staged move, the main furniture to follow. She filed this without knowing why she was filing it.

Then the passenger door opened and a man climbed down who was not the crew.

He was tall in the unhurried way of someone who had never needed to make himself smaller — not performed height, not the careful posture of someone compensating, but the easy vertical of a man entirely comfortable with the space he occupied. He was wearing a dark jacket despite the late-August heat, the kind of considered practicality that sat in the grey area between military habit and personal preference. His hair was dark, combed back with an efficiency that suggested he had done it without thinking about it. He pushed his sunglasses up and stood surveying the neglected property with an expression she was too far away to read clearly — but something in the set of his jaw suggested calculation rather than disappointment. He was not surprised by the state of the place. He had known what he was coming to, and had come anyway.

Sera's fingers went still in the water.

She could not have said why. He was, from any objective measure, simply a man unpacking a moving truck on a public street on a morning in late August. She had observed men of this general description many times without incident. But there was something in the way this one stood — the particular quality of stillness she associated with people who were always, even in mundane moments, taking stock — that triggered the low-frequency alertness she had trained herself over years to trust. Not fear, precisely. Something adjacent to it, and adjacent to something else she was not prepared to examine at seven in the morning beside a birdbath.

He had the face, she noticed, of someone whose expressions were decided rather than unconscious. Not a closed face — not cold — but a face where everything visible had been chosen. Dark hair, broad shoulders, the kind of face that would photograph well and give very little away in person. He moved with the contained efficiency of someone who knew exactly how much space he was permitted and used none more.

He turned, and for one fraction of a second his gaze swept across the lane in the automatic sweep of a man assessing his new surroundings, and it landed on her.

She looked down at the birdbath.

She was aware, suddenly, in the specific acute way she became aware of things when she most needed not to be, of several facts simultaneously: that she was standing barefoot in the garden at seven in the morning, her hair loose down her back, wearing the dress with the embroidered moons that she wore when she wasn't expecting anyone to see her because it was her favourite and also deeply indefensible as garden-wear. She was aware of the foxglove in its too-straight rows. She was aware of the rosemary, which was doing something quietly architectural near the gate. She was aware, most acutely, that the water in the birdbath — which she had been touching for the past four minutes while thinking about the compost schedule and the equinox preparations and absolutely nothing else — had taken on, in the peripheral vision she was currently refusing to use, a faint and unmistakable blue glow.

She pressed her palm flat against the stone basin. The glow died. The water returned to the ordinary grey-blue of an August morning, slightly clouded, blameless.

She counted three seconds. Four.

Then she looked up.

He had turned back to the truck. He was talking to one of the crew, gesturing at the house's front door with the brisk efficiency of a man who had made his decisions and was now simply attending to logistics. He did not look back across the lane. She watched him for one more second — the set of his shoulders, the precise unhurried quality of his movements — and then went inside and closed the door behind her.

"Good," she said, to no one in particular. "Perfect."

She did not look out the front window for the rest of the day.

She was entirely fine about this.


She did not ask Mrs. Patel about him, because asking Mrs. Patel about anything in Hollow Creek was functionally equivalent to publishing it in the village circular with a photograph attached. She did not ask Gordon the letting agent, because Gordon had the institutional memory of a man who liked to feel useful, and a question about a new tenant from the sitting tenant across the lane would be the kind of thing Gordon raised, unbidden, at every subsequent interaction for years.

She observed, instead, with the practiced indirection she had developed over a decade of needing to know things without appearing to want them.

He kept odd hours. The kitchen light in the house across the lane burned past midnight on Tuesday and Wednesday, and was on again by six-thirty Thursday morning — she knew this because she herself kept odd hours, particularly in September, when the equinox approached and the world grew thin at its edges and she slept badly until she had done the necessary work. She was not monitoring his lights. She simply happened to notice them during her own entirely unrelated nocturnal activities, which was a distinction she was maintaining with great care.

He ran. She gathered this from the sound of his door at six-fifteen on the second morning and the faint rhythm of footsteps fading toward the village and the fact that when she went out to check the compost at quarter to seven he was not across the lane and when she went inside at half past he was, coming back up the lane at a pace that suggested he had covered ground. She did not linger at the gate. She was a woman with compost to assess.

On the third day Gordon came through with her quarterly receipts and mentioned, with the carefully casual delivery of a man bearing interesting information: "New tenant across the way. Moved in Tuesday. Seems quiet enough. Paid six months in advance, cash transfer. Bit unusual." A pause engineered to invite further conversation. "Moved from London originally, I believe, though he's been — elsewhere — since. No sign of—"

"Thank you, Gordon," said Sera, with the warmth she kept ready for necessary closures, and thanked him for the receipts and closed the door.

She stood in the hallway and assembled what she had.

He was alone. He had come from elsewhere — genuinely elsewhere, not a single location but a series of them, which Gordon's phrasing suggested and which she believed, because there was something in the quality of how he moved through a new space that she associated with people who had done it many times. He had paid in advance, which meant he had intended to be here for at least that long before he arrived. He had wanted the lane.

It was probably nothing. People moved to villages for entirely ordinary reasons — quiet, space, the particular appeal of a slowed-down life that the city had eventually failed to provide. She had done it herself, for precisely those reasons and a few others she didn't mention to letting agents.

She went to the workbench and looked at the herbs laid out for the monthly renewal — the sea salt, the cedar chips, the mugwort she had gathered on Tuesday — and then looked at them for a while longer than the task required.

Then she added rowan to the arrangement.

Rowan was not, technically, part of the monthly renewal. Rowan was for thresholds and unknown quantities, for the early days of a new situation before its nature had resolved. Her grandmother had written about it at length. You add rowan, her grandmother had written, in the careful slanted hand that Sera could still hear in her head, when you don't yet know what you're protecting against. It holds the door. It gives you time to see.

Sera ground the rowan berries with the same focused efficiency she brought to all physical work. This was precaution, not foreboding. She meant this approximately sixty percent.

Across the lane, his light came on at precisely seven in the evening, steady and warm.

She went to make dinner.

She did not look at it.

She looked at it once.


The cottage knew something had shifted. She felt it in the way she always felt the house's dispositions — not thought, exactly, but awareness, the low murmur of a space that had been inhabited by a single person for three years recalibrating itself to the introduction of a new variable in the lane. Old houses in old places had their own kind of knowing. Hers knew considerably more than most, having been worked in and lived in and slowly, over three years of her careful occupation, shaped into something that was as much an extension of her practice as the workbench and the greenhouse and the standing circle in the woods she had inherited from whoever had come before.

She told it, that evening, what she always told it when she was uncertain: that she was fine, that the wards were current, that the foxglove did not need to be any taller, thank you, it had made its architectural statement and she considered the matter closed. The cottage's timbers settled with the particular creak she had come to interpret as acknowledgment. The candle on her workbench burned straight, which was its neutral expression.

She sat with her grandmother's journal open to the page she had read enough times to have it by heart — the one about the particular vulnerability of settled places, the difference between a threat and a disruption, and the ways they presented, initially, as indistinguishable. She had reread it more times in the past three years than in the decade before, because settled places were their own kind of exposure, and she had wanted to be sure she was seeing clearly.

She read it through twice more. Then she set it aside and let the blue back into the birdbath water — not because she needed it, but because it was hers, and because her grandmother had also written, in a different passage, that a practitioner who feared her own nature was already, in the most important sense, diminished.

She watched the blue light move in the basin from across the dark kitchen and thought about the man across the lane in the house that had been empty since she arrived, and about the specific quality of his stillness when he stood surveying his new property, and about the fact that the foxglove had leaned — she had felt it; she always felt it; the plants in her garden were extensions of her in a way she had never fully found the language for — very slightly, almost imperceptibly, toward the lane.

She closed the light in the water and went to bed.

She did not look out the front window.

She looked out the front window.

He was at his kitchen table, reading. His head was bent over the page in the specific angle of real absorption — not the performance of reading, the actual state of it, the slight forgetting of the surrounding world. He turned a page without looking up.

Sera let the curtain fall.

She lay in the dark and listened to the cottage settle and thought: it's probably nothing.

She thought this again, and with more conviction, three times before she slept.
