Leo Harrington, 32, is an architect who builds things meant to last, and spent two years quietly coming apart over the one thing he walked away from. He is patient with other people and catastrophically impatient with himself — with his own mistakes, his own silences, the specific cowardice that cost him the best thing in his life. He loves people by trying to protect them from things they didn't ask to be protected from; he learned it from watching his father, who left his mother not because he didn't love her but because he thought she'd be better without him.
