Steamy

Nora Walsh has one rule: don't want things you can't have quietly. Then she messages Jake Callahan under her middle name, and for the first time in years someone sees her exactly where she feels most herself: in her words. Jake thinks Ellie is a stranger. Nora knows he is the breathtaking client sitting eleven feet away from her desk. When the truth lands, it hurts. But the best love stories are not about being chosen by someone perfect. They are about being known by someone brave enough to come back, say the hard thing, and see the girl who was there all along.

Chapter 3: The Double Life

Three weeks, two lives. Nora by day β€” second desk, good copy, professionally invisible. Ellie by night β€” the most interesting conversations she's had in years. He calls her El. She tells herself it's fine. Becca does not think it's fine.

Chapter 4: The Near-Miss

She slips β€” Lake Shore Drive traffic, South Loop, too specific β€” and he almost puts it together. Then he comes to her desk with a bio request, they talk for forty-five minutes, and he says: 'You're actually here.' She knows what he means. She's been here the whole time.

Chapter 5: What Writers Do

He asks what she's wearing. She says it's fiction. They both know it isn't. The eleven-pm conversation that changes everything β€” and the morning after, when Becca says: tell him, or end it. Those are the only options.

Chapter 6🌢🌢🌢

Chapter 6: Palimpsest

Campaign presentation day. She presents the copy she built from his words. He's on his phone during the meeting. She knows what he's reading. When he says one word that only Ellie would know β€” she doesn't run. That feels important later.

Chapter 7🌢🌢

Chapter 7: What the Silence Said

The conference room. His cold anger, her careful honesty. She says: I knew you wouldn't have talked to me. He says nothing. Four seconds. She deactivates the account that night. He doesn't text. Tyler laughs. Jake doesn't. But he doesn't stop him either. That's its own kind of answer.

Chapter 8🌢

Chapter 8: What Jake Did Instead

Jake's point of view. The account is gone. He checks every morning. He runs. He drives past her block twice without knowing why. His sister Amy says: you're upset because she doesn't look like what you pictured. He can't argue. What he can do is finally text Marcus for Becca's contact.

Chapter 9: The Bar, and After

Tyler makes a comment at a bar. Then another. Jake says stop. Tyler doesn't. Jake says: the next word you say about her ends this for a while. He means it. Then he drives to South Loop with a dirty chai, oat milk, from the good place on the corner β€” not the one on the block β€” and he knocks.

Chapter 10🌢🌢🌢

Chapter 10: Nora Walsh, Properly

She gives him twenty minutes. He takes forty. He fills the four-second silence with the right words. She tells him about Brandon. He says: that was faulty data from a broken system. She calls it engineering her trauma. He calls it a future project. Then he kisses her. Then everything else.

Chapter 11🌢🌢

Chapter 11: The World Has Opinions

Together. The gallery event where someone says 'oh' with a world of meaning. The bathroom mirror. Him finding her in thirty seconds and moving through the room like she's where he's going. Tyler's last text, Jake's blocked number, and Marcus saying: she's good for you. I'm sorry I didn't say something sooner.

Chapter 12🌢

Chapter 12: What's Left

Eighteen months later. A power outage. An unreasonable number of candles. A ring chosen without asking, perfect anyway. He quotes the first thing she ever posted as Ellie. She says yes. Obviously yes. Epilogue: June, the lake, forty people, Becca's speech, Marcus quoting her writing, Amy saying she told him so. Winifred bearing witness to all of it. Everything.
