Sera Blackwood has built everything she wanted: a home that knows her, a man who loves her, a child on the way. Then the door opens and Emrys Vane — dead for eleven years, never officially broken up with — is standing on the step with Institute surveillance closing in and nowhere else to go. He cannot leave. Callum cannot ask him to. And Sera, seven months pregnant and more powerful than she has ever been, must live inside the most impossible thing: loving two people at once, in the same lane, while the world she has built decides whether it will hold.

At breakfast, three days later: 'Tell me who he was.' Sera tells him. Then: 'Why didn't you tell me?' Then Delia calls, and says the thing that will only make sense in Book 3.

Chapter 5

Chapter 5: The Rhythm of Three

The domestic pattern establishes itself. Callum makes tea for three. Emrys walks the ward on the fifteenth. The foxglove grows at an angle that could be pointing at either house.

Chapter 6

Chapter 6: The Community Weighs In

The Elder Council sends word. Margot examines the pregnancy and says something about timing that nobody quite registers. Delia arrives from Edinburgh having already done the thing Sera would have delayed.

Chapter 7

Chapter 7: Aurelia Frost

Callum faces the northeast Elder in York. Three questions. One oath. Two hours in a car on the way back with all three of them, and the specific silence of people who have just done something significant together.

Chapter 8

Chapter 8: The Institute Moves

Albury's agents confirmed in the village. All three map the threat. Emrys tells them what eleven years inside the Institute taught him about how the practice holds things in the body. Nobody registers what he has just explained.

Chapter 9

Chapter 9: What Emrys Says Once

Emrys asks to speak to Sera alone. Callum says yes. The question is asked: 'If you were not pregnant, would you choose him?' She says: 'I don't know.' He says: 'That's the most honest thing you've said to me since I arrived.'

Chapter 10

Chapter 10: The Two of Them

Callum and Emrys alone in the kitchen. Each says one true thing. Callum makes tea. They sit in silence for twenty minutes. This is as close as they get. Sera walks in to find them both at the table and understands something she will not say aloud until Chapter 14.

Chapter 11

Chapter 11: The Night Before

Preparation for confrontation: three people building the same thing from three different angles. Delia arrives. Margot walks up the lane at 11pm. The ward is at maximum depth. Ending: Sera at the kitchen window, 2am, with both men in her line of sight.

Chapter 12

Chapter 12: The Ash

Albury's four agents at dawn. The wards hold. An agent reaches Sera. Emrys creates the diversion — spending the last of his active practice. Callum destroys the Institute's public operation in forty minutes. Aftermath: Sera puts yarrow compresses on Emrys's forearms. Callum watches.

Chapter 13

Chapter 13: What Emrys Spent

His active practice: largely gone. Her grief for this is real and not managed. The question of the baby's name comes up by accident — and Emrys says the one name from her grandmother's journals that Callum had also been considering.

Chapter 14

Chapter 14: Aurelia's Judgment

The Elder Council formally accepts Callum's oath. That evening, Sera says the thing she has been managing for two months: 'I think I am in love with both of you.' Callum says: 'I've known since Chapter 9.'

Chapter 15

Chapter 15: What Callum Asks

The 2am kitchen conversation. His question: if Emrys had come back six months earlier, what would have happened? Her answer: you still would have come to the lane. And I still would have taken the headphone out.

Chapter 16

Chapter 16: The Name

Wren Elspeth, decided at the kitchen table by all three of them. Callum tells Sera what Emrys said — that he is in love with a woman he has not met yet. Callum adds: 'He's almost never wrong. It's incredibly inconvenient.'

Chapter 17

Chapter 17: Three in the Garden

The last quiet week before the due date. Sera barefoot in the July garden, both men nearby without coordination. She thinks: I have been so afraid of this feeling for so long. She is feeling everything. She is not broken.

Chapter 18

Chapter 18: The Signal

3am. Sera knows what it is. She calls both of them — deliberately, because she will not let the choice be made by default or omission. Both arrive. Callum's footsteps on the stairs immediately. Emrys's light across the lane two minutes later.

Chapter 19🌶🌶

Chapter 19: Labour

Delia on the phone. Margot's candle on the windowsill. Both men in the room. The wards do something Sera has never felt them do. A baby's first cry. The page ends. The book ends. The reader does not know what Sera's face is doing.
