Chapter 3: Partner Work

Five weeks pass. She becomes his showcase partner. The close hold that requires thirty-eight seconds of nearness. A walk to Baker Street where he asks: are you alright? She says she's managing. She goes home and thinks about Wednesday for the next four days.

Chapter 4: Learning to Want Again

A Thursday night text: staying at the Chelsea flat. The house too quiet. The small box in the back of the nightstand. For the first time in five years, Kaira is alone with herself in the way that matters. In the morning she understands something: she has been hungry for a long time. She has been pretending not to be.

Chapter 5: Private Practice

The studio double-booked. His flat in Brixton. One hour of rehearsal, the close hold, thirty-eight seconds with no mirrors. He moves his hand. She steps back and leaves. She walks to the end of the street and stops. She turns around.

She goes back. She says it plainly: I'm here because I want to be. Not because of what you did. He touches her like someone who has been paying attention. She sleeps, for the first time in years, properly. She drives home at midnight through the wet city thinking: so this is what I forgot.

Chapter 7: The Affair

Six weeks. Tuesday evenings, the street she knows by heart, the small flat that turns out to be full rather than cramped. He asks about the interiors work and actually listens to the answer. One night she stays. Coffee in the morning. She drives home thinking: this is the thing. Then a good dinner with her husband. Then lying awake holding both truths simultaneously.

Chapter 8: Small Asks

The rent. The car. The conservatoire placement. Three thousand pounds across six weeks and Kaira doesn't notice the pattern until Priya names it. She goes anyway on the next Tuesday. She doesn't ask herself what she's reading in his words because asking would require receiving the answer.

Chapter 9: The Girl in the Doorway

She goes unannounced. A woman's voice through the intercom. She walks to the end of the street. His texts. The call she answers at last. He says: I have screenshots. I need fifty thousand pounds. She says: I'll need some time. She goes to get Sia from school and holds her daughter's hand and thinks: what have I done.

Chapter 10: The Decision

She opens the banking app and sits with her finger over the transfer for four minutes. Then she closes it. She calls Priya. She tells Rom everything in the drawing room at nine o'clock. He says: I know why. He says: we're going to have a real conversation. Long overdue. She sits in the dark afterward and waits to feel terrible. What she feels instead is: present. Finally in the right room.

Chapter 11: Cold Clarity

He appears at Sia's school. Doesn't approach her. Just watches. Something settles in Kaira — not fear. Something colder. She arranges a meeting. Brockwell Park. Saturday morning. She tells Rom to be nearby. She is not bringing cash.

Chapter 12: What Remains

A cold bright morning. A hill. A case file marked open. What Rom did is revealed: he was there. He helped. The marriage, slowly, becomes a different shape — smaller, more honest. Kaira restarts her interiors practice. Sia grows. Some nights Kaira lies awake thinking about a park in April. She is not pretending she doesn't. She is here anyway.
